Dredging and Cleaning Operations on Storm Water Canals to Start!
 With the monsoons approaching, residents of Velachery are now concerned about the strom water canals not yet being dredged or cleaned. When contacted, Chennai Corporation ,Div.153 AEE Mr. Nandakumar, stated that the strom water canal connecting Velachery lake to Pallikaranai Marshland and the Verangan Odai will be cleaned by the Public Works Department. At present the Chennai Corporation Div.153 has undertaken to clean the storm water drains in the streets of Velachery.
With the Verangan Odai almost nonexistant, the PWD needs to reform the canal from scratch. Mr. Gunasekaran, AE, PWD stated that the Verangan Odai  is to be constructed with concrete under the Jawarharlal Nehru Rural Development Scheme. Rs. 4 crores has been alloted for cleaning the waterways in Chennai, under which the Verangan Odai is also included. For the construction of this Odai the Central Govt. and the State Govt. will share the expenses in a ratio of 35%(Central) and 65% (State). The State Government may shell out the money from the exchequer or may take loans from other Govt.agencies. For the present work to clean, dredge and form the Odai will start from October first week. A short term tender has been floated for this cleaning operation. This Odai from Saraswati nagar, Alandur, will be connected to the Pallikaranai Marshland.
Similarly the storm water canal from the Velachery lake will also be cleaned, desilted from October first week. All culverts are also to be cleaned. Mr. Gunasekaran also stated that a proposal has been sent to raise the height of the culvert at the Madipakkam road and Velachery-Tambaram road junction. At present the low level of the culvert does not facilitate the free flow of flood waters from Velachery and Madipakkam areas.
 The Verangan Odai already carries raw sewerage water from Alandur and Nanganallur areas. Now raw sewerage water from Ullagaram- Puzhuthivakkam areas is also being let into this canal. Will the PWD block these sewage drains to the canal once the canal is constructed in concrete? If this is not done, then the Verangan Odai will be carrying only raw sewerage water to the Pallikaranai Marshland and not flood waters from the surrounding areas of Velachery.

Officials inspect roads !
Chennai Corportion officials visited Velachery on Sept.14 to inspect the the roads in the Anna nagar. Residents of Anna nagar on Sept.11th had complained to the Velachery AEE Mr.Nandakumar and to the Chennai Corporation Div.153 Councillor Mrs. Kishakumari Mathivannan regarding laying of roads in Anna nagar. Since last year’s monsoon, roads in this area are in a very bad shape. They have not been given any patchwork and some of the roads have not been laid at all. As a follow up to the complaint Chennai Corporation Zone X AC Mr.Sampath inspected the roads on Sept.14. He was accompanied by Ex Councillor Mr.P.Dhanaasekaran, Mr.D. Mathivannan, Mr.Nandakumar, AEE, and Mr.Pasupathi, AE of Div.153.
Mr.Sampath AC assured the residents that WBM roads will be laid in anna nagar soon. He also stated that the proposal to construct storm water drains in the inner roads would be approved soon. Once the scheme was approved, the SWD would be constructed and then the remaining roads would be laid. Most of the roads to be laid would be in concrete as yearly raising of the tar roads created flooding of homes during the monsoons.

Need a calm, relaxed atmosphere to do some quiet reading? Then the right place is the Government  Chennai District Branch Library at Dhandeeswaram nagar. Inaugurated by Thiru.M.K. stalin in March 2000, the library has well equipped reading room on the ground floor and books section on the first floor. Large tables, comfortable chairs, you can always find a group of people reading the day’s newspaper or magazines.
Mr.Na.Annadurai, Librarian says,” There are 25,250 books in this library. They cover a range of subjects like Histroy, Literature, autobiographies, Religion, Medicine, General Knowledge, Reference books, Novels, Short Stories, Plays, and more. The reading recieves 13 daily newspapers and around 100 magazines. Today there are 1900 members and 165 patrons of the library. To become a patron, aperson has to donate just Rs.1000/- to the library. The Govt. will issue a certificate acknowledging the person as a patron. Anybody who has interest in the growth of the library can donate. The monery is deposited as Fixed Deposits, and the interest from this FD’s is used to run the library.
To become a member of the library is easy. We charge a caution deposit of Rs.50/- and a yearly fee of Rs.10/-. The person should give an attested copy of proof of address along with the application. A member is allowed to take upto 3 books home, which is free of charge.”
Librarian Mr.Na.Annadurai has held many competitions for school children to encourage the habit of going to libraries. In 2005 he recieved the Best Librarian award from the Govt. of Tamilnadu, presented by Hon’ble Minister Thiru. Anbhazgan. Recently the library acquired a computer system. Now Mr.Annadurai hopes to get a telephone and internet connection, which would be of great benefit to students, research scholars, and members.
The Velachery Branch Library is situated at 7th Avenue, 7th main road, Dhandeeswaram nagar, Velachery. It can be approached easily by bus also. Get down at Baby nagar bus stop on Taramani Link road. Walk back and take the road opposite to Karaikudi Restaurant and take the first left after the service road. The library is open from 8.00am - 11.00am and 4.00 pm - 7.00pm. Sundays holiday.

Road Blocks!
Will EB Dept. wake up?!
EB posts will stand till eternity until the base rots and falls off on its own! That seems to be the prevailing attitude of the the Electricity Department in Velachery.Traffic is  increasing day by day in Velachery. Motorists have now taken up to travelling through the inner residential streets to avoid traffic jams at the Vijayanagar junction. Standing in the way is an EB high tension wire post preventing traffic from taking a free left from Velachery-Tambaram main road to 100ft Byepass road. Ever since the storm water canal was built in 2004, this post is yet to be shifted by the EB Dept. PWD officials stated that neccessary amount has been remitted to the EB department for the shifting of the post. But till date the EB has not taken steps to shift this post. Similarly a high tension wire post stands bang in the middle of the Dhandeeswaram 8th cross street. This post no longer carries any high tension wires. It now stands creating obstructing to traffic. Will the EB Department take action to remove these posts. Will the EB wake up or is waiting for lightening to strike at these posts and bring them down? This seems more likely than the EB working to shift the posts.

Independence Day Celebrations at Velachery Govt. Library!
The Chennai District Branch Library at Dhandeeswaram Nagar, Velachery celebrated the 62nd Independence Day in  a grand manner. The branch library conducted various competitions like singing, oratory and painting for students of various schools.around 80 students participated in the competitions of which 25 students won prizes. The awarding of prizes to the winners was held in a function on Aug.22. Mr.P.Subramani of BSNL welcomed the gathering.Mr.T.V.Masilamani, (Retd. Judge, Madras High Court) presided over the function and presented certificates to the winners.Mr.A.N.Kothandapani, Mr.S.Kumara Raja, Mr.R. Chandra Sekaran were present on the ocassion. Special invitees were Kalaimamani Kovai Anurada, Writer and Stage Artiste, Mr.M.G.Selvam, Retd. Librarian, Mr.P.Ramachandran Nadar, and Mr.A.Muthumalai. Mr. Kovai Anuradha gave an interesting speech on how to save time and gain time for school children.He appreciated the effort Mr.N.Annadurai, Librarian, Velachery Library, had taken to ensure that each and every child present was seated in a chair. He said that in many school functions that he had attended as chief guest, he had always observed that adults sat in chairs while students stood around for hours together.Though brief his speech was well recieved amongst the students present.Mr. Annadurai, Librarian presented the vote of thanks

Culvert to be ready soon!
The much needed culvert on the Velachery-Tambaram main road, at CWET, Pallikaranai will soon be ready in next few weeks. Recently another culvert was completed at Mylai Balaji nagar, Pallikaranai. The culvert will help to facilitate the free flow of flood waters during the coming monsoons.Flood waters from 19lakes, including Velachery, Madipakkam, and Taramani reach the Pallilkaranai marshland through these culverts. The public hope that the Government would take similar action to build the Verangal Odai soon to bring the flood waters from Alandur, Madipakkam and West Velachery to the marshland.

Water pipes to be laid!
Water pipes in Venus colony 1st and 2nd streets are to be laid. Work is expected to start in the first week of October. Mr. Sudakar, AE, Metrowater, Velachery Div. stated that other left over streets in Sankar nagar and other areas in Velachery would also be taken up to lay water pipes. He also stated that the problem of sewage mixed drinking water supplied to VGP Selva nagar has been set right. The leak in water mains had been found and repaired. Now good drinking water is supplied through the pipes. Mr.Sudakar stated that residents complaints regarding supply of drinking and sewage overflow was being looked into promptly.
Vedadri Maharishi Birthday Celebrated!
The Velachery Manvala Kalai Mandram Trust (VMKMTrust)  celebrated Vedadri Maharishi’s birthday on Sept.13 at Velachery in a grand function. In the well attended function Film Director SP Muthuraman was the Chief Guest. Prof. Kala Asai Thambi spoke at length about Vedadri Maharishi’s concepts of leading a good life and the necessity for bonding between husband and wife. A session was conducted for more than 30 couples to rebond with their spouses. Later Mr.SP Muthuraman spoke to the gathering and presented mementos to the members of the Trust. Annual report of the VMKMTrust was read out and vote of thanks was presented to the gathering.

Root Canal Treatment

Traditional Crafts - Temple Umbrellas!
The month of Aadi is over and its time for festivities to begin in temples and homes. Presiding deities of temples are taken out with great fanfare, to the sound of Nadaswaram and drums around the streets. Shielding the Lord and the Goddess are the huge gaily coloured cloth umbrellas! Colourful tassles swinging to the tune of the accompanying music, the whole procession is a slow graceful dance in motion.
This issue of Reach Velachery brings you a look into the making of these beautiful Umbrellas. Simple or richly done, these are a must to temples. This is now an almost declining craft with fewer families opting to take it as a profession. Most families have been engaged in making these umbrellas for generations together. Very labour oriented, it requires hand skills, craftsmanship and loads of patience. Mr.Varadarajan of Kanchipuram has been practising this craft since childhood. He learnt this craft from his father, who in turn learnt from his father. And so it goes on. Not only Vararajan, but his mother and sisters are also engaged in this profession.Normally these umbrellas are charged from Rs. 2500/- onwards. The more elaborate and richly made up ones cost more. A simple umbrella takes 3 days to make. The umbrella frame is made up of bamboo splats and the main handle is made of light wood.
Those adventurous enough can copy the process onto any old umbrella frame for a smaller version to decorate the navarathri dolls at home.
