Residents protest against RDF Plant !
On Oct.14th residents of Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Pallikaranai and Velachery staged a flash protest against the Chennai Corporation’s move to set up a garbage pellet making plant inside the Perungudi dumpyard to produce Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF)w. Mr. Periyasamy, President of Sai Nagar Welfare Association stated that since 1998 residents of the surrounding areas of the Perungudi garbage dumpyard have been exposed to ground water pollution, toxic gases and environmental degradation. This was due to the dumping and burning of garbage inside the Pallikaranai Marshland. Now it has come to the notice of the protesting residents that the Chennai Corporation has alloted 30 grounds inside the dumpyard to a private company to set up a plant. This plant will convert garbage into pellets, which in turn will be sold to tea shops, hotels, industries and where ever fuel is needed. Instead of using gas, kerosene or firewood for cooking, public will now use these compressed garbage pellets. This usage will turn out to be very harmful to people as burning of the pellets will release more toxic gases in a widespread area. Mr.S.Kumara Raja, Convenor, Save Pallikaranai Marshland Forum stressed on the need for the Neel Metal Fanalca and Chennai Corporation to implement source segregation of the garbage. If this is done only then can the bio-degradable garbage be converted into RDES. Mr. Srinivasan, Convenor, Save Pallikaranai Marshland Forum said that incenerator plant should not be set up inside the dumpyard. If set up, it will only lead to plastics, medical wastes and other wastes burnt together. This in turn will result in more pollution of the surrounding areas. Convenors of this protest have planned to send their objections to the concerned authorities.

Corporation Park Misused!
The Chennai Corporation Children’s park on Ramnagar 7th street is being misused by migrant construction workers of nearby on going building projects. This park was fitted with play swings, see-saws and slides for young children to play. Moreover benches were also installed for the accompanying elders and parents. what should have been a peaceful and safe place for children to play has now been spoiled thoroughly.
All that one can see in this park is makeshift stoves, clothes dried out on the benches, building materials like casurina poles, sand and debris blocking free entry to the park.
The Chennai Corporation Div.153 does not seem keen on the maintenence of parks in Velachery. It is left to the residents and local welfare associations to care for the parks and playgrounds. Some welfare associations of areas like Baby nagar, Annai Indira Nagar have ensured that parks and playgrounds are maintained properly and put to good use. But most of the residents of Velachery show a strong lack of civic sense or civic responsibility whenit comes to protecting public property. The people of Velachery should know that the parks and playgrounds alloted in each nagar has been paid for from their pockets. A layout which has ‘Open Space Reserved’(OSR) areas marked is paid through the every buyer who registers a plot in that layout. So though the OSR lands belong to the Government to develop for the benefit of the residents, it is also the responsibility of the residents to ensure that concerned officials act to create green lung spaces in the congested and polluted environs of the city. Not only by continual use of these parks, playgrounds, but the vigilant public and welfare associations should act to chase away encroachers on these public places.
Reach Velachery contacted Mr.Nandakumar, AEE, Chennai Corporation, Div.153 on Oct.7th and brought to his notice of the encroachment and misuse of the children’s park on Ramnagar 7th Street. He assured that prompt action would be taken to clean up the park for the use of the residents. But to date no action has been taken. It is now up to the residents and the welfare association to join together and ensure that the park is cleaned up. After all it is our children and grandchildren who are playing in the park. So wake up people!

As a temporary measure large diameter pipes would be laid at this junction before the coming monsoons. It is hoped this project would take off soon to provide quick draining of the flood waters.

Wildlife Week Celebrated!
The State Forest Department celebrated Wildlife and Forest Conservation’ week from Oct. 1st to 7th. The Chief Warden of Forests has been sending out SMS to spread awareness on the need to conserve forests and preserve wildlife. This would go towards protecting our environment, prevent floods, ugrade our water table, provide cleaner air to breathe, and more. In this context residents of Velachery should know about Pallikaranai Marshland which is also known as another Vedanthangal. Care Earth and NGO made a study of the marshland in 2002. Dr.Jayashri Vencatesan and Dr. Ranjith Daniel of Care Earth found this marshland home to 106 species of birds, 46 species of fishes, 9species of frogs, 21types of lizards and snakes and 10types of animals.
In 1996 Dr.A.Rajaram, Scientist and member of the Madras Naturalists Society made the following findings regarding the variety of birds that lived and migrated to the Pallikaranai Marshland. According to his study the predominantly grassy swamp is home to many species of birds. After the rains the insect life increases, plants grow more and microbes support various life forms, which in turn attracts the birds. The Pallikaranai Marshland is the only place in Chennai where Purple Moorhens can be seen in numbers. They are about the size of the domestic hen, beautiful purple all over witha very red beak. 2 species of herons are the Grey Heron, possibly the 0largest bird seen here and the Purple Heron. The Herons fly with slow characteristic wing beats with the heads retracted to an ‘S’ shape. Egrets also occur here. The most common are the Cattle Egrets, white birds, seen in association with buffaloes. The little Egret with about the same size is distinguished by its partly yellow coloured toes. The Paddy bird or Pond Heron is alsoa common bird. It has a brown body and when it is resting or feeding it is well hidden among the reeds. When disturbed it takes to air, with a display of its startingly whitewings in contrast to its brown grey body.Waders are winter migrants from the far north. These birds come and feed in the marshland, usually when high tide occurs at the Adyar Estuary, the place they prefer during low tide.Pheasant tailed Jacanas, Snipes, large Pied Wagtails, weaver birds, Munias, Warblers roost here in hundreds. Pied Brush Chat, Pipit, Madras Bush Lark can be seen on the roadside or on the wire lines by the road. The handsome Blackwinged Kite can also be seen perched on the electric wire. The Small Blue Kingfisher and the Pied Kingfisher are also seen here. The winter visitors among birds of prey include the Marsh harrier, the Pale and Pied Harriers.
The birds of Marshland in their numbers and species are a sure indication of the health of the marshland since they are dependent on the lower forms of life like the insects and other invertebrates, which in turn depend on the water qualilty. In this context it becomes all the more important to save the Pallikaranai Marshland and preserve it from being polluted by garbage dumping by Chennai Corporation and letting out of raw sewerage water by the Metrowater Board (CMWSSB) into the Marshland.

Sewer Floods Homes!
Residents of Baby nagar extn. VOC Street for the past few weeks are living in stench and squalor. The reason - breakdown of the temporary sewer pump at Baby nagar. This has led to blockage and overflow of sewage water into houses and onto streets. Mr.Narasimhan, resident of VOC street says, “we have been living with this awful stench for more than 10 days. The metrowater does not seem to take any action. Sewer water is now overflowing from all possible places in our homes. Empty plots are filled with sewer water. We are scared that our children and elderly people will now be prone to infections, fever, cough and cold. Mosquitoes are also increasing day by day. The Chennai Corporation has also not taken any action to spray.” When contacted, Mr.Dayalan, DAE, Metrowater said that the pump at temporary roadside pumping station at Baby nagar had broken down. It was repaired and soon the blockage of sewer would be cleared. He aslo said that plants were on to lay sewer pipelines to connect Baby nagar with Seethapathy nagar pumping station. This would help in easy flow and prevent such blockages of sewer in future. Permission to cut across the Taramani link road to lay pipelines has now been obtained. Soon work would start to lay the pipelines. Rs. 37 lakhs estimate has been prepared for this project. Tax paying public are suffering on one side, while on the other side estimates and projects are being written on paper. The affected residents asks why the Metrowater board has not nade any temporary arrangements like get tankers to drain the blocked sewers. This would help to migrate the problem of oveflowing drains to a certain extent. Will the authorities listen?

Heartburn, Reflux….
What is heartburn?
Heartburn is a burning sensation felt in the midline in the chest, often made worse on lying down. It is caused by acid refluxing from the stomach into the food pipe (called the oesophagus in medical terms). In a small minority of patients the symptoms can be severe and disabling. Occasionally these can be the harbinger of long-term complications.
Some biology……!
Stomach produces hydrochloric acid as a dilute concentration. It is our body’s way of disinfecting our food. At the junction of the food pipe (oesophagus) to the stomach, there is a slight thickening of muscle. This is in a state of contraction and acts to keep the junction closed. This helps to keep the acid in the stomach and normally prevents reflux. With aging this muscle tone decreases and sets the stage for reflux.
Is it common?
Actually a mild degree of reflux does happen in all individuals. Usually the acid is promptly cleared by the normal contractions of the oesophagus. Reflux also helps to expel any trapped wind (by excessive swallowing) by belching. Too much acid over prolonged period of time can cause damage.
What tests are available?
Endoscopy is a procedure during which a thin flexible instrument is inserted by mouth into the stomach. It uses fibre optic and CCD technology to transmit images of the food pipe and stomach.
pH & Manometry - measures the luminal pressure of the lower end of food pipe. Often it is combined with pH measurement as well.
Barium X-rays: To check for structural abnormalities predisposing to reflux. In some patients part of the stomach can be ‘riding’ high in the chest. This is called a hiatus hernia. Some types of these herniae need surgical repair
What treatment is available?
Smoking, alcohol, excessive spicy foods, irregular meals and obesity, all of which are known to worsen symptoms. Excessive fatty foods and large meals at night time can precipitate symptoms. There are a range of medical treatments all of which aim to reduce or buffer the acid. In patients where the symptoms are severe surgery is advised. In this operation the surgeon wraps around a portion of the stomach around the lower part of the food pipe. This helps to buttress the lower end of the food pipe. It is done by keyhole surgery. However these are specialist operations and reserved only for those with disabling symptoms.
Should I be worried?
If symptoms are disabling or there are new symptoms (such as difficulty in swallowing) it is advisable to seek medical opinion. Sometimes other conditions (e.g. gallstone) can mimic some of these symptoms. Hence it is advisable to seek medical opinion if there is any doubt. Since cancers of oesophagus and stomach are common in India, it is advisable to have an endoscopic examination if symptoms occur above the age of 40.

Dental Implant
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically anchored into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place. It is used for permanent replacement of missing teeth. The benefir of using implants is that they dont’t rely on neighbouring teeth for support and they are permanent adn stable. Implants are a good solution for tooth loss because they look and feel like natural teeth.
Implant material is made mostly from titanium, a material that is compatible with bone.
Can anyone recieve dental implants?
Talk with your dentist about whether you are an implant candidate. You must be in good health and have the proper bone structure and he;thy gums for athe implant to stay in place. People who are unable to wear dentures may also be good candidates.
What can I expect during this procedure?
The dentist will perform Implantation procedures to anchor the “artificial root” into or on your jaw bone. The procedure is done in the dental office with local anesthesia. Once the implants are placed they are not disturbed for a period of 3-4 monthsso that the bone actually fuses with the implant.
What is the success rate of implants?
The success rate for implants depends on the tooth’s purpose and location in the mouth. The success rate is about 95 percent for those placed in the front of the lower jaw and 85 percent for those placed in the sides and rear of the upper jaw.
How do I care for implants?
Your overall health may affect the succedd rate of dental implants. Poor oral hygine is a big reason why some implants fail. It is important to brush around the fixture at least twice a day. Your dentist will give you specific instructions on how to care for your implants.
