Sri Yoga Narasimhar Temple Dated!
Velachery is home to many cultural heritage temples! It boasts of more than 1000 years old Sri Chelliamman Temple, Sri Dhandeeswarar Temple, and the Yama Theertam Kulam on Velachery main road. Now Archeological Survey of India(ASI) team headed by Former Director Mr.Satyamurthy have dated the Sri Yoga Narasimhar Temple on Velachery main road to be more than 1300 years old! Dr.S.Badrinarayanan, Geologist, Former Consultant for NIOT spoke about this temple in an exclusive interview with Reach Velachery.
Dr.S.Badrinarayanan was part of the team that discovered the remains of a 10,000 year old city ruins under water of the coast of Gulf of Cambay, Gujerat. In Reach Velachery’s issue dated May1st, 2002, we had published an exclusive interview with the three scientists who had made this discovery that literally rewrote the pages of our cultural history!
The Sri Yoga Narasimhar Temple is at present under renovation. Dr.S.Badrinarayanan is the Technical Consultant for the Renovation Committee of the temple. In this exclusive interview he explains in detail the new discoveries made about the temple.
Read on...
Q. How did you date the temple?
Dr.S.B: There were epigraphs or writings on the stone walls at the bottom of the Garba Griham. Dr. Rajavelu, renowned Epigraphist, ASI deciphered the language to come up with new discoveries. According to the writings Raja Raja Chola had granted numerous lands to this temple. This means the temple already existed when the donations were made.Various donations have also been made by Pallava kings, especially Dhandiverma, after whom the place here was named. The writings have also stated this place to be ‘Chaturvedi Mangalam’ meaning the place where Four Vedas were taught. All the epigraphs have now been officially recorded by the ASI.
Dr. Satyamurthy studied the idols of this temple and has stated them to be of the Pallava period. The Moolavar idol of Sri Yoga Narasimhar is a typical example of Pallava style dating to more than 1300 years ago. The bronze idols of Sri Veda Narayanan in this temple are also classic example of the Pallava period. The facial structures, scaling of the metal after casting process to bring out the rich colour of the metal, all indicates the antiquity of the idols.
The Moolavar here is rare and sculpted of excellent stone. The stone is known as Charnogide, found mainly in Thiruvakarai, Thinidivanam District, near Vakrakali Amman Temple. The stone quarries near this temple is one of the main suppliers of stone to build many ancient temples of Tamilnadu including the Brahadishwara Temple.
Q. What other discoveries were made in this temple?
Dr.S.B: When the Garba Griha was dismantled we were astonished to see the evidence of architectural superiority of the ancients! The base was filled with huge boulders that took the impact of the seisemic activity or better known as earthquakes!. This meant the superstructure of the Garba Griha remained safe and free from cracks. This foundation amply shows that the ancient people knew the art of excellent civil engineering and construction of huge structures. We also found broken pot shards and char coal pieces in the foundation, indicating the earliest dated consecration of the site for the Moolavar.
Q. What are the Renovation Comittee’s plan to rebuild the temple?
Dr.S.B: We have the expert advice of the Stapathy and his drawing to follow through the construction of the temple. As a Geologist and Technical Consultant for the renovation committee I have proposed to follow the ancient’s method of laying the foundation. Once the concrete foundation and stone structure is laid for the Garba Griha and the Arthamandapa, we will be filling it with the same boulders that were taken out. After all they had prevented the ravages of earthquakes for more than 1300 years!

This temple renovation project has been taken up as a donor project under the Prahalad Kainkariyam Trust. Those who are interested to participate in this project may contact the renovation committee members cell:94441 34843, 94444 66840 or the HR & CE,EO, Cell: 92813 68309.

New Traffic Diversions
in Velachery!!

From July26th new traffic diversions have come in place in Velachery. Mr.A.Sunder Raj, Inspector, Chennai Traffic Police stated that new arrangements have been made in Velachery for smooth flow of traffic. He said that vehicles coming from Taramani Road towards Vijayanagar Junction have to take a right turn near LIC Pumping Station , go through LIC Colony main road to reach Velachery main road. ‘U’ turn at Vijayanagar roundtana has been cut. Vehicles on either side of Velachery-Tambaram main road can take ‘U’ turn at Ponkavitha market. Similarly ‘U’ turn can be taken at Metrowater Storage Tank on 100ft Byepass road.
These new arrangements have brought down the chaos at the Vijayanagar junction toa certain extent. During morning peak hours traffic is seen to flow smoothly. It is only in the evenings that traffic piles up at ITbuses crowd the roads. Recent showers and slush also add to the confusion.
Though two constables have been posted at Ponkavitha to direct the traffic, traffic chaos still occurs here. Mr.S.Kumara Raja, Sec. Federation of Velachery Welfare Associations suggests that traffic coming from Tambaram may be allowed to take a ‘U’ turn here. Where as traffic from Vijayanagar junction should proceed upto MRTS station and take a ‘U’turn under the bridge. Similarly buses from Taramani road could take a ‘U’ turn under this bridge instead of crowding the LIC Colony roads.
Mr.Sunder Raj said that after studying the impact of the new traffic arrangements, neccessary alterations would be made.

Ask The Doctor
Wisdom Tooth

What is Wisdom tooth ?
Wisdom tooth is the last tooth or the third molar tooth. Humans have 4 wisdom teeth, one at each of the four ends of the mouth. The wisdom tooth is the last to erupt into the mouth, by which time most of the space in the mouth is taken up by the other teeth.
When is the Wisdom tooth removed?
Dentists usually perform a wisdom tooth removal when a patient does’nt have enough room in the mouth. Because of the limited space available, a wisdom tooth can grow sideways or get trapped under the gums.
What happens if trapped Wisdom tooth is not removed?
When this tooth partially erupts in the the mouth, it can form a pouch that traps food. The trapped food can cause the wisdom tooth to decay and infect the second molar in front of the wisdom tooth. If the gums become infected, it can cause swelling, pain and a very bad odour in the mouth. When this happens it is very important to the wisdom tooth extracted.
What are the effects of infection?
If the infection is left untreated, it can continue around the wisdom tooth and result in facial swelling to the extent that it canlimit the mouth from opening. The pressure from a wisdom tooth trying to get into the mouth can cause the rest of the teeth to move out of place.
How is the Wisdom tooth rmoved?
The wisdom tooth removal is done under local anesthesia. An incision is made and the gum tissue is gently pulled away from the wisdom tooth. If any surrounding bone is in the way, it is rmoved. If required the wisdom tooth is sectioned and pulled out in pieces. Finally sutures (stitches) are placed so that the gum tissue lays back in correct position. Patients are placed on anitbiotics before and after the removal of the wisdom tooth.Patients are seen immediately one day post operative and one week after for suture removal. This tooth removal experience is relatively easy for young people and this is the best time to have a tooth extraction as patients are young, healthy and heal quickly.

The Teacher and the Child
Where learning starts?
When a child is ready to interact then the child is ready to know or learn something. When children initiate a conversation or raise a doubt, due importance needs to be given to explore the concept. Exploration should be homely like a mother trying to find what is neccessary for the child. The child’s thirst for knowledge should be satisfied by the teacher through proper interaction, practical exposure, real time approach of the concept, provide more situations without making it monotonous, adequate teaching capacity, and adequate learning environment.
How to make the child accept the teacher?
First the teacher should approach the child in a friendly manner. Affectionate words and actions build confidence in the child to let them accept the teacher as the next person after their parents. Individual attention to the children and providing learning situations more enthusiastic make the child bond with the teacher.
How the teaching-learning is to be done?
If the child is quiet then try to kindle the interaction by showing some curious situations or attractive and big pictures. If the child initiates some talk or tries to explore then try to interact or explore. Give all the kids to explore their experience either individually or collectively.
What material can be used in class for teaching?
Actual materials will do better than replicas. A school can have learning centers or a lab where ample material is provided to use by the children. Weekly field trips can be taken to have real learning experience like vegetable market where all the vegetables, money transaction can be taught. On sites stone collection, sand collection, leaf collection, flower collection, feather collection, etc., can be made by the students.
Does monotonous learning/writing work out in learning?
Teaching is a combination of action, reading and writing. When some concept related activities are done, make the child read and then write. When a kindergarten kid is taught the alphabets, first the sound related actual articles [Axe is in the form of A, Two balloons stuck to a stick] are taken in class and lets the child recognise the sound as well as strokes. Then the child feels the sound of alphabet in a word by phonetic practice through simple songs, exploration with picture and more use of the word or oral usage of the sound. Then the teacher has to over write and show the written flow of letter. Now the child will be ready to read or write. Give fun opportunities like writing with crayon, finger painting, shaping with noodles or any other easy way.
How to test the child’s outcome?
Formal tests can not bring the real outcome. Give chances to use in more actual situations and check the actual awareness and degree of usage. An evaluation of the child’s performance can be checked by observing for a week, the usage of learned concept when situations are given. A check of the usage of a single concept in more situations will give the real output. As teachers, let us explore the child’s talents and make them a true citizen of this world!
