Swine Flu in Velachery! 'No need to Panic' says Govt.
Swine Flu or A(H1N1) virus fever claimed the life of a four akshya schoolyear old Sanjay Balakrishnan, a resident of Velachery. Following this tragic death on Aug.10, schools in Velachery declared a week’s holiday for children. Though the State Government deplored this panic attack, parents were afraid to send their children to school. Corporation of Chennai Health Dept. doctors and medical staff arrived at Akshayah School, LIC Colony, Velachery, where late Sanjay was a student on Aug.11. Speaking to Reach Velachery Principal, Mrs.Kumud Raj says,”It was a very unfortunate and tragic death of our student due to swine flu. As soon as we heard the news we declared a holiday for the school. The next day on Aug.11 officials from the Chennai Corporation visited the school to take tests of the students. We had to call all the parents and asked them to bring their children to school. Of the 820 students 450 students came and cleared the tests. Officials asked us not to close the school as it would create panic amongst the public. Though we were ready, most of the parents were hesitant to send their children to school. Govt.Doctors then took a short session with our teachers. Our teaching staff were told to look out for symptoms like dry cough, running nose, and fever. If any child showed these symptoms, then the teacher should inform the parents and send the child home immediately. The Deputy Health Commissioner visited our school to check it for any contamination. They gave our school a clean chit.”
According to Doctors Swine flu spreads when the patient coughs. People with history of asthma, diabeties, cancer or other terminal illness are prone to instant infection. If detected it can be treated within 7 days. Wearing masks is not of much help, as the virus spreads when the patient sneezes or coughs. Only nearby people will get contaminated. Mr.Muthusamy, resident of LIC Colony said that only the first two days there was tension in the colony. After the doctors visited the area and allayed the residents fears, people went about their daily life.

Thumb Sucking Habit

In preschool children thumb sucking is a very normal response to anxiety and stress. While thumb sucking is normal for infants and toddlers, this behaviour should be stopped by 3-4 years. Prolonged thumb sucking produces significant problems with chewing, speech and facial appearance.
Effects of Thumb Sucking:
The more times a child sucks his thumb and the greater the sucking pressure, the more harm is done to teeth and jaws. Day and night forceful thumb sucking causes the upper front teeth to move out and tip upwards, while lower front teeth move inwards. The lips always seem to be open, affecting the beauty of the face.
When to break the habit?
If a child stops thumb sucking before loss of baby front teeth and permanent front tooth eruption, most or all harmful effects disappear within six months. However if the habit persists even after permanent front teeth eruption, there can be lasting damage: flared or protruded upper teeth, delayed eruption of upper or lower front teeth, and no contact between the upper and lower front teeth-called open bite. This can result in chewing difficulties, speech abnormalities, and an ugly smile.
How to break this habit?
First try home remedies to break the habit. Try using gloves on their hands before bedtime. Paint thumbs and fingers with foul tasting substances, wrap bandages around the fingers. Yet, all these measures may be seen as a challenge to overcome by the child.
Professional solution:
Thumb sucking is a deeply ingrained behaviour and needs counselling. In the first appointment the child is explained in detail about ill effects of the habit. The dentist would in the next appointment take mould of the patient’s teeth and make a habit breaking clip. This clip would be a little uncomfortable at first but the child gets used to it in a few days. This clip will help to break the habit of thumb sucking.
