New
Traffic Diversions on Velachery Main road!
New
traffic diversions have come into force at Halda junction
and at 5 Furlong Road junction. Mr.Christoper, SI, Traffic, Velachery
Police Station, said that traffic proceeding to Saidapet will now
have to go via 5 Furlong road and take the subway at Race Course
Club, Guindy and join Anna Salai at Halda signal. This diversion
would help motorists avoid two signals - one at Concorde and the
other at Halda. Left turn at Concorde signal is no longer possible.
In case you have travelled upto that signal, then only right turn
is allowed on Sardar Patel Road. From here you have to go towards
Raj Bhavan and take a free left turn to reach Saidapet. As all buses
going towards Saidapet have to go via 5 Furlong road, this means
more accessibility to the Guindy Railway station.
The
majority of motorists feel the new diversions have eased traffic
jams to a certain extent. The on going construction of bridge at
Chakrapani road in Guindy is supposed to be linked to Kathipara
junction. Started nearly a year ago, the construction has been going
at a slow pace. This bridge which goes over the railway tracks, is
now being used to park private buses, cars, and vans. If the bridge
is completed soon, then it would help to ease the increasing traffic
on Anna Salai at Guindy. Accessing the Airport would also be easier
for people travelling from Velachery and its surrounding suburbs. When
will it be completed?

Netaji
Remembered!
Netaji Subash Chandra Bose's birth centenary was
celebrated in 1997. While his role played in the freedom struggle
of our country is well known, little is known about the people who
worked along with him. In 1997 a meeting with Mrs.Gita Krishnamurthy,
wife of Sri. M.Ramamurthy who was one of the P.A's to Netaji recalled
her memories of her husband and Netaji.
Here in this issue of Reach Velachery we present excerpts from the
interview of Mrs.Gita Ramamurthy then aged 84 years old.
Mrs. Gita Ramamurthy is fondly called as 'Gitaji' by her close circle
of friends. With memories almost fading, she recalls her first meeting
with her future husband who was student at the Tokyo University,
Japan. Sri.M.Ramamurthy was the uncle of the renowned exponent of
Bharatanatyam Ms.Yamini Krishnamurthy.Gitaji a Japanese by birth,
married Sri.M.Ramamurthy after five years of friendship. By then
her husband was playing an active role in Netaji's organisation'Azad
Hind Fauz'(AHF). AHF was then primarily training soldiers in Japan
in preparation for war for the Indian Freedom Struggle. Sri.Ramamurthy
used to then accompany Netaji for negotiations with the Japanese
authorities.
She then recalled her first meeting with Netaji at the Tokyo airport.
"I had gone along with my husband to recieve Netaji at the
airport. When I was introduced to him, the first thought that struck
my mind was that it was going to be a historic moment in my life!"
Later interacting with Netaji, who enquired her of life in Japan,
Gitaji's main work was to translate Netaji's speeches into Japanese.
These were delivered when Netaji addressed the people in Singapore
and Burma. These speeches were then sent to various newspapers in
Japan for publishing.
After the war Gitaji came with her husband to settle down in India.
With her husband's death in 1984, her becoming part of the Indian
landscape was sealed. Spending calm hours in Thiruvannamalai, her
days followed the path of Shri Ramana Maharishi, whom her husband
had also followed ardently.

View
from the Otherside!
India is known as 'Karma Bhoomi' not only in our
country but by many foreigners. Late Mr.Hamsa De Reed, a Dutch national
settled down in Thiruvannamalai after 1947. He was an ardent follower
of Sri Ramana Maharishi's teachings. The interview with him was
done in 1997. We now present excerpts from it.
Mr.De Reed was born in Java now Indonesia andspent his childhood
there. During World War II, East Indies was occupied by the Japanese.
During this occupation he was thrown into the concentration camp,
where he nearly died. After liberation by Indian troops he was transported
to Australia from where he later went to Holland.
He recalled that on the invitation of Dr.G.H.Mees, Research Scholar
in Comparative Religions & Symbolism, he came to India in 1951
at a time when the country was still trying to get used to the fact
that it was independant.
Mr.Hamsa recalled that from the beginning he was struck by the fact
that young Indians had a fascinating interest in anything foriegn
- be it consumer goods or an imported culture. He said the reason
for this fascination was because Indians considered the West as
advanced countries due to their material affluence. Real independance
lies not in acquiring material possessions but in discoveringone's
own roots in one's own soil. According to him no other country like
India has such beautiful and deep roots in ancient culture and tradition.Indian
forefathers had the unique distinction of having the time to reflect
on the why's and wherefore's of life without the necessity of the
botheration of having to look after bodily comforts, as India is
a land of plenty. He concluded that it is these deep cultural roots
are India's great hope of a future that would find economic prosperity
without losing its individual identity.

Kitchen
Tips
Add
a little amount of salt while boiling eggs. It will prevent the
eggshell from cracking and also make the soft.
Don't throw the water used to boil eggs down the drain. Instead
use it to water your plants. It will provide excellent minerals
for the plants.
Before polishing your shoes, rub a little lemon juice on it to remove
any grease or grime.
Rub salt in your hand and then wash with warm water and soap to
get rid of onion and garlic smell.
To check if mushrooms are fresh, apply a little tumeric powder to
it and keep aside. They will turn black if they are stale.
